Signs of Spring Storm Damage

July 27, 2023

Spring storms are notorious in the midwest, the weather is so erratic storms can take us by surprise. You cannot always be sure that your home is prepared to take whatever comes at it.

Siding Damage

While durable, low maintenance and attractive,  vinyl siding  can be seriously damaged during a storm.

  • Cracks:  They run parallel to the siding, often in half-circles.
  • Chipping:  A small piece of siding that has been broken off, typically in the shape of a half-circle, at the bottom of a siding panel ridge where the siding has no inward flexibility to absorb a direct hit.
  • Breaking and Holes:  Large hailstones and flying debris in severe storms can break or holes can be punched into the siding.

If you have aluminum siding, the most common signs of storm damage are:

  • Dings and Dents
  • Pieces of Siding  can be ripped off completely in a really bad storm, especially one with harsh winds.

Whenever your home is hit by a hailstorm and there doesn’t appear to be damage at first glance, inspect your aluminum siding closely when the sun is low in the sky (in the early morning or late in the evening), this will make the damage more visible.

Window Damage

Not many homes have storm shutters anymore, must shutters are just decorative. So, during any harsh storm, there is the possibility that your windows will sustain damage. After your home has been slammed by hail, high winds, or a tornado, the common signs of damage are:

  • Shattered windows
  • Cracks and holes
  • Broken panes
  • Damaged frame

Although many windows are double sided and have storm screens, not all of them do. Remember to watch out for shards of glass and make sure you board up any shattered or broken windows until they can be repaired or replaced.
