Common Roof Issues After a Storm

Broken Roof

Your roof takes a beating in every storm. Hopefully, your roof is up to the task and can protect your home and its occupants from the elements. After the storm subsides, it is imperative that you inspect your roof for damage. The continued structural integrity of your home may be at stake.

High Winds Cause Roof Damage

Wind may be the number one culprit when it comes to storm damage to your roof. Shingles can be torn from the roof by wind, and so can the metal fascia pieces that protect your chimney and other elements. Moreover, a tree limb or other debris can rip shingles away during a storm. The sealing strip between the shingles can also be damaged, which means that water can invade your roofing system.

The Problem With Hail

Occasionally, severe hail will come along and cause considerable roofing damage. Check your roof after a hailstorm for dimples, dents and cracks. Cracks are likely the most concerning as they have the potential to let the elements into your home where they don’t belong. Dimples are the least serious, but they can still leave your house vulnerable in the next storm.

Conduct an After-Storm Home Inspection

After a high-wind storm or other weather event, it makes sense to inspect your home for damage. Your roof is the most exposed surface on your home, so you’ll want to pay particular attention to it. Look for missing shingles and fascia or anything that looks different from the way it looked before the storm. Finally, inspect your attic to check for leaks as this can become a serious problem for your home.

If you take care of your roofing, it will take care of you and your home. Be on the lookout for storm damage to keep your roof functional.
